This commercial really made my day when I first saw it. It’s brilliant and whenever I watch it, it makes me smile. But it also makes me think about books. I really love reading and whenever I find some time, I delve into a book. However, since the moment I bought an e-reader device I haven’t read a single paper book. I’m not sure if it’s a shame or not.
Ebooks are easier and more convenient, as you can have an unlimited number of books in a device which is small enough to be carried in a handbag. For me it’s one of the best inventions ever. But still some of my friends say an ebook is not the same as a book. They say it doesn’t have the soul of a real paper book. You know, the smell of paper, the touch of turned pages, the satisfaction when you get to the back cover. These arguments don’t appeal to me however. For me reading is reading. It doesn’t matter if the book is made of paper or it’s in an electronic format. If it’s a good read, it absorbs me in exactly the same way. And one more argument – ebooks are eco-friendly. No trees suffer. And how about you – do you agree that an ebook is not really a book with a soul? Or do you think paper books are doomed to extinction like dinosours?
In many countries schools have introduced e-coursebooks. Students don’t learn from traditional books but from their laptops. Poland in this respect is still lagging begind. No money – as always. However we have made a small step towards this e-revolution – the online workbooks. Some of you love them, some hate them. And what would you say to replacing all the school coursebooks with ebooks on your laptops? Would learning be more fun?

Yes, of course. I think that learning through playing is better than traditional learning. I also think about buying e-book readers. I think that with this technology we gain much. Yesterday, I spoke with my friend about e-book readers and we have found the advantage – not destroying vision.

In my opinion the introduction of for example tablets instead of paper books/woorkbooks would not be good.
Students instead of learning would be busy with other things not related to the lesson, the best example are the politicians in Poland who were given tablets a few months ago.
They would create a new excuse for not learning, for example “my tablet has low battery so I can’t work on this today”.

And as for your comment – you’re probably right talking about the excuses. Battery low, no Internet connection just when the homework was supposed to be done, a cat which deleted the homework… 🙂
And I can also imagine students playing Angry Birds on their tablets instead of focusing on grammar:) But I think that if you don’t want to take part in a lesson, you won’t do it, no matter if you have an electronical gadget with you, or not. Everything has its pros and cons and I still think there are more advantages than drawbacks of modern technologies in education.
I’m a traditionalist. I agree with the opinion that paper books have their souls and charm. That’s why I prefer paper books. I do not want to criticize the e-books. We need to follow the progress. E-books are more convenient and people reach for them more often. However, I hope that they will never replace paper books that have been with us for centuries 🙂
@Małgosia – Although I am a real fan of new technologies, I do agree that our life without traditional books would be somehow incomplete. And to be honest, I don’t believe any technology will ever wipe out paper books.
Traditional books are great! I love the smell of paper when I open a new book, straight from the bookstore. Nothing can be better than this.
Electronic ones are defective… In my opinion an ebook it’s not a book. I can’t feel the same emotions when I read traditional book and another text on the computer screen. Once I fell asleep in front of my notebook when I was reading an ebook! 🙂
I prefer paper books becouse they don’t need a batery like ebooks and when I read an ebook I can spoil my eyesight. But when we talk about coursebooks I prefer ebooks or laptops. Sometimes students’ backpacks are really heavy and expensive. The price of coursebooks in electric version would be cheaper. Unfortunately, during the lessons pupils could cheat the teacher and play on laptops instead of reading.

I prefer e-books. E-books are light and handy. You can take it everywhere. In one small ebook you can hold a lot of books. E-book can withstand even one month. Charging them is very fast. Most e-books has a screen that is similar to the book. You can also change the text size. Books on ebooks are much less expensive than paper books.
In my opinion the electronic book is something really interesting and worth the purchase. I was given a used book from his grandfather and I know that by reading her ebook would no longer be so valuable. Maybe it’s the sentiment itself does not know. But ebooks in schools certainly would have ordered our back. 🙂
I prefer paper books because buying them makes me happy and I dream about my own library at my home. In my opinion paper books have souls and charm.
I’m not sure about my opinion. I love paper books and I think that every book has it’s own soul. I have a small library at home and there are a lot of books, something about three thousand. I love being in this room. The smell of books is amazing as some of them are 50 or 100 years old!
On the other hand, I think that e-books are lighter that paper ones and you can take it with you everywhere you go. For me reading is reading too and it propably depends of my mood when I choose paper book or e-book.
On the one hand, ebooks are a great respide for the environment. You don’t need to cut trees to read a book. However, there’s something about paper books… I love smelling them, touching them while reading. It’s some kind of addiction. I have an ebook on my own and sure, it’s handy and light, but I guess I’m too used to the paper version. But I’m fighting with it and trying to encourage myself to it.
